Having been one of the original bass music practitioners, it makes a lot of sense for Bassnectar AKA Lorin Ashton to team up with dance music legends Underworld on their classic track REZ”. On February 12th, OM Records imprint Child’s Play will release Bassnectar’s remix of the cut, first put out by the seminal EDM group 20 years ago. “REZ” has had a special place in Ashton’s heart for well over a decade as a memorable part of his early exposure to dance music. “By the time I first heard ʻREZʼ…it was already a classic. It was the third ‘rave’ I had ever been to," says Ashton, "That was the only song I remembered from the entire night. And for years to come, whenever I hear any version or remix or even a slight fragment of that shimmering resonant arpeggiator I get flashbacks.”

The Bassnectar remix adds mounds of thunderous bass to the track while still retaining its delicate and distinctive arpeggiated melody. The single will be released on 180-gram vinyl with digital download, full color jacket sleeve and liner notes from Bassnectar

San Francisco-bred producer Blackbird Blackbird is best known for his deeply textured, dreamy sounds accompanied by electrifying melodies. Most closely classified with indie/folktronica genres, this prolific composer recently released a highly-acclaimed EP entitled Boracay Planet, but the young music-making-machine doesn’t stop there; he is also continuously releasing a string of top-notch remixes that are sure to get your weekend started right. Scroll down to enjoy!

This poppy Kate Bush cover shifts from a grungy beginning with a gloomy undertone to a soft uplifting melody. With airy vocals conveying a sense of delicacy and strong transitions these harmonies are sure to be pleasing to the ear.

From the beginning, you can’t help but move to this harmonious Rihanna remix. With a catchy melody and dreamy vocals it feels as though you are floating until it brings you back with the sharp trappy hook that never really loses its elegance. The softness tone makes it really easy to fall into adrift.

This mix has a spacious resonance layered with blanketed highs and dark synth lows. Taking the intense vocals of Bjork, chopped and stretched, was very powerful and complemented the essence of Bjorks dark tones very naturally.

From all of the Adele remixes out there this seems to be the most unique complex one I have heard yet. Filled with many boomy/boxy layers this is over all a crisp tune. You definitely won’t get bored listening to this.

This incredibly produced Ginuwine remix has a variety of layers that all compliment one another beautifully. What stands out the most is the incredible build-up accompanied by the high/low distorted vocals, until the beat eventually drops. Varying sounds from trap to electronic, this up beat mix will feed your ears in every way possible.

Camoflaug3 was a group that formed out of a cause rather than a musical mission. The two members who go simply by 001 and 002 are electronic music veterans and have been there from the days of when it was simply two (or three turntables), a mixer and a massive sound system hauled into some “not so legal” space.

Fake DJ is the result of this history colliding with a casual conversation about the state of the DJ nation. 001 put his hands to the keyboard and wrote the lyrics and conceptualized the track and 002 hit the studio to pull together the beats. The next ingredient was the vocalist, which had to be a Poet Laureate of sorts, someone who also understood the roots of the music and what was trying to be said. “Robert English was born for this vocal and he nailed it in just two takes, it was just perfect” says 002. The cherry on top was bringing in the legendary DJ Sneak to do the remix. His mix brings out something in the track that only he could, deep groovy bass lines and some essence of his classic You Canʼt Hide from your Bud.

As DJ culture accelerates into the mainstream it has virtually lost all of its history with this new generation of fans, left it behind as a new generation stands on the shoulders of giants, and become giants themselves pushing the architects and creators into the shadows. The musical mission statement is now very clear for Camoflaug3: respect your roots and know your art.

DJ/Producer J Boogie has been a key player at Om Records for many, many moons now. This moombah mastermind truly embodies the variety that SF nightlife has to offer; his DJ mixes blend a range of tracks that cover hip-hop, reggae, afro-beat, disco, electro, and house. As a producer, he has been releasing music since the 90s, both solo and as J Boogie’s Dubtronic Science—a project he embarked on with a live band, including a horn section, percussionist, and MCs.

This year, Boogie started monthly club-night at Monarch to sate SF party peoples’ need for a more multi-faceted musical experience: Night Moves unites veteran San Francisco house music vibes with emerging sounds of modern funk, nu-disco and moombahsoul. Imagine classic Chicago Trax blended with the current Disco Boogie revival. Podcasts, edits, and club nights will be curated in an effort to break the boundaries in San Francisco’s dance music scene.

Next week, on Saturday, November 3, Night Moves brings out Moon Boots to grace the decks and heat up the Void sound system. Be prepared for a cosmic journey of disco and R&B led by this mysterious producer, along with support from Deejay Theory, Papa Lu & The Whooligan, and, of course, J Boogie himself. “For many downtempo fans, Mushroom Jazz is where it all began.” –BPM

“The most influential American contribution to the laid back beats scene.” –URB

“Mark Farina is an expert in creating seamless downtempo mood pieces.” –FILTER

“Mushroom Jazz sets the benchmark for quality in the field of jazzy soul and hip hop.” –DJ Mag

Two decades ago, Chicago-native Mark Farina began experimenting at his DJ gigs, dropping slower, deeper tracks along the lines of disco classics, acid-jazz, hip hop, and downtempo. In Chicago, which is primarily known as a house music town, his selections were deemed more appropriate for home listening than for the dance-floor. Despite this, Farina continued to develop his sound, which soon after became coined as Mushroom Jazz. Mark created a popular series of mixtapes that circulated in the Chicago area and beyond, the demand for which grew from 50 to 500 tapes per mix!

Soon after, Mark took his experiment-turned-endeavor to try it out in a new home. Farina began juggling two residencies in Chicago and San Francisco, and he began throwing his own Mushroom Jazz club night in the city by the bay.The Monday night party became an integral part of the SF scene, gathering an eager following for five years.

After years of dormancy, a Mushroom Jazz party has been revived! Farina is playing his most prime Mushroom Jazz sound selections quarterly at Monarch, in the SoMa neighborhood of San Francisco. The next Mushroom Jazz party is October 24th, 2012 and it is assured to get your booties boomin’ and your mushes roomin’

Already garnishing early heat from The Hype Machine, Fader, and SF Weekly, Blackbird Blackbird’s “Boracay Planet” drops today via Lavish Habits! Blackbird Blackbird is the moniker of San Francisco-based wünderkind Mikey Maramag. His unique style of dreamy folktronica recalls influences from all ends of the musical spectrum; deeply textured, hypnotic songs pay homage to psychedelic pop the likes of Caribou and Washed Out, while the warmth of analogue instrumentation spliced with digital artifacts hints at contemporaries James Blake, Four Tet and Mount Kimbie.

Anthemic, dream-driven themes inspire Blackbird Blackbird’s work, where layers of electronic texture drape over organic sounds and ghostly vocals. Within elongated song structures, Blackbird Blackbird harnesses thematic elements of dynamism and composition to create depth and complexity, while never losing sight of his pop sensibilities.

Blackbird Blackbird’s debut album Summer Heart was lauded by modern tastemakers, receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Fader, XLR8R, Rcrdlbl, and more. Recently returning from a whirl-wind European tour, Blackbird Blackbird has been signed to the Lavish Habits imprint out of San Francisco. His new Boracay Planet EP features remixes from the likes of American bass music virtuoso Grenier (aka DJ G) and Atlanta’s foremost proprietor of rave music, Distal.
