“Not a problem.” I’ve only been here for four days and I’m already picking up on the local slang and phrases. I kind of feel retarded doing it, but i cant help myself. Sunday was a day of full on grinding. After my last blog, we headed down to the Forum, where our first show was. This was the most beautiful concert venue’s i’ve been in, the decor was in the vibe of an old school roman forum. Capacity was about 1,400 and it filled up quickly. Here’s a shot of the decor, it’s a little dark but the best my camera could do..

Another busy day on Monday, we had some of the most important interviews of the trip. Both Zeph and Azeem had two seperate engagements for the Zane Rowe show. Zeph recorded a mix live that aired at 10pm later that night. Here he is with the triple JJJ sound engineer below…

Azeem prerecorded his interview with Zane Rowe herself. She had Azeem pick 5 songs where he thought the lyrics were poetic and discuss. The interview went very well….Azeem with Zane Rowe.

The Triple JJJ studios actually was in the ABC Broadcast building, but don’t get confused it is the Australian Broadcast Company. Here is a shot of the studio hallway..

Since, i’ve been here i noticed how environmentally aware the population is here. Walking about town you see all kinds of signs reminding people to conserve engery etc. In the hotels you have to stick your room card in a wall slot to even turn on the power in the room. This sign was posted in the ABC studios…

After the interviews, we headed to the Illusive HQ, where several business including Mushroom Publishing, Frontier Touring, Acclaim Magazine, Illusive Entertainment and Liberator are run. Here’s the address on the side of the building…

Here’s their conference room. I was highly impressed with their set up. Apparently the company that we are working with has been responsible for some of the biggest tours that have ever hit Australia including The Eagles, Justin Timberlake and Madonna.

Here’s an autographed board from Madonna, referred as one of their most prized possessions.

It’s now Tuesday and I’m on my way to Perth. I’m excited to get there as it supposed to have a very similar vibe to west coast of the states if you know what i mean. We basically have a show every night till the end of the tour, so it’s now crunch time. I have to run off and get a new charger for my shaver…not sure if i mentioned that it blew up in the hotel bathroom.

Hey folks, so i’m finally back online after paying $100 to get 400mb of downloading and uploading. Our Friday was a busy one as we did 3 interviews and soundcheck for a special intimate gig that night at F4. We left the hotel around 12pm and headed to Stomp ourt Australian label partner. Expecting a small office space we were blown away with the size and product that they move.

We then headed to Kiss.fm, one of Melbourne’s premier radio stations. After a nice interview we took a couple pics.

Walking on the streets downtown, the vibe was very simliar to San Francisco minus the homeless. Melbourne is known for one of the most extensive urban rail lines in the world. Most people don’t have cars and rely on public transportation.

Since $2 and $1 are in coins, i feel like a definitely need a change purse.

Here’s a photo of an old Victorian style building built during the Gold Rush of the 1860’s. The downtown area is full of original restored buildings. There’s really no type of natural disasters here so everything has easily stayed in tact.

If you thought our Football stadiums were big, the MCG home of AFL, crickett and rugby seats over 100k. It’s also only about $150 for season tickets, no wonder the fans are so dedicated.

The food here is amazing. All kinds from all regions, Melbourne is known as one of the most culturally diverse places in Australia. Azeem knew of this Jamaican spot called ‘Yeah Man,’ from when he was here with Spearhead. The food was incredible. One wierd thing is, that it’s against health code violations to be able to take food home in a doggy bag. So we could take the left overs. I guess recently over 150 people got sick from one restaurant, so they have all kinds of regulations.

Here we are at RRR Radio. This station is broadcast nationally and they actually asked me to get in on the interview. Here’s a pic of us with Gavin, the dj.

Hoy mates. The Om: Hip Hop crew has just arrived to Melbourne and ready to dive into our Australian tour opening up for Talib Kweli. The plane ride wasn’t as bad as I thought. Quantas Airlines is simply the best airlines I’ve ever flown; personal tv’s with 100’s of movies and tv shows at your disposure, 3 meals, free alcohol and all around good service. A couple movies and a couple reruns of the Simpsons and I was already flying over Australia. Between Sydney and Melbourne, there wasn’t much to see except pure wilderness. Mountain Ranges (the Great Divide), canyons, rivers and lakes occupied the territory. As we approached our landing in Melbourne, the landscape was very green and beautiful. neighborhoods started to appear and it really looked just like any other American city.

If you look close, you can see the Kangaroos.

Going through customs was a breeze. Luckily we had all the proper paper work provided by Illusive. When we met up with Joe, he provided us with pocket size itinerary pamphlets. That’s when i realized that we are working with the right people.

After checking in to the hotel, we took a walk to the city center of Melbourne. I was amazed on how clean and quiet it was, no one honking their horns, no sirens, no cussing and no homeless people. We did see one alley that reminded us of home…

On the way back to the hotel, we discovered Chinatown. Very similiar to the Chinatown in SF, minus the trash and smell, the district was bustling with tourist, souvineers shops and resturants. This one happened to catch my eye…

Now back the at the hotel, I’m trying to get some work done before we head out. Zeph & Azeem are resting up and getting ready for dinner. I’m looking forward to find out what the nightlife of Melbourne has to offer. Stay tuned for more updates, video clips and photos tomorrow. Easy.

Hope you are all doing well. So sorry its taken me a week to get back to
you, I’ve been super busy. Just last night I finished filming my first music video. What a crazy experience! It was really interesting to see and hear the director’s interpretation of how in her mind she envisioned the song being acted out, which is exactly what you do in a video “Act out your
song”. It was kind of strange for me in the beginning because I had never
really thought about my song the way a director would. It definitely gave me a different perspective on my song. So here I am after a 5 days of being in the surreal world of living behind the scenes / camera readjusting to the real world. As some of you already know my album was released 6 days ago and just that alone was a huge deal for me. I really can’t believe how fast everything is happening. I mean seriously the fact that I am going to have a music video and that my album is now out in the world being heard by
thousands of different people is just amazing. I truly feel so blessed!!!
It’s also been amazing to hear all of the feedback from the album. It all
seems like a big dream. Then to top it off with what’s going on with my
Father at the moment, it just makes it all a little bit harder for me to
actually believe. Life is so crazy, to think that something you’ve waited
for your whole life starts to happen right when you find out that your Dad
is sick. I do believe that everything does happen for a reason though and
that this happening will only make me stronger. As for his progress, well he is just now finishing up his 6th day post Chemotherapy and is feeling pretty tired. We were hoping that this first round of chemo would kill off all of the Leukemia but have now discovered that he will more than likely have to receive a bone marrow transplant. All of your prayers and positive thoughts would be greatly appreciated at this time. I’m personally just taking it one day at a time, which is all I really can do. I along with my DJ, The Southerner, am just getting ready for all of the performances that we have coming up. We are excited about all of the opportunities that we have been presented with since the album’s been released. I will keep you all posted on what s going on with my Dad and of course the music. Thanks for listening and again all of your prayers.

Love,

Samantha James
