Having been one of the original bass music practitioners, it makes a lot of sense for BassnectarAKA Lorin Ashton to team up with dance music legends Underworld on their classic track “REZ”. On February 12th, OM Records imprint Child’s Play will release Bassnectar’s remix of the cut, first put out by the seminal EDM group 20 years ago. “REZ” has had a special place in Ashton’s heart for well over a decade as a memorable part of his early exposure to dance music. “By the time I first heard ʻREZʼ…it was already a classic. It was the third ‘rave’ I had ever been to," says Ashton, "That was the only song I remembered from the entire night. And for years to come, whenever I hear any version or remix or even a slight fragment of that shimmering resonant arpeggiator I get flashbacks.”
The Bassnectar remix adds mounds of thunderous bass to the track while still retaining its delicate and distinctive arpeggiated melody. The single will be released on 180-gram vinyl with digital download, full color jacket sleeve and liner notes from Bassnectar

“For many downtempo fans, Mushroom Jazz is where it all began.” –BPM
“The most influential American contribution to the laid back beats scene.” –URB
“Mark Farina is an expert in creating seamless downtempo mood pieces.” –FILTER
“Mushroom Jazz sets the benchmark for quality in the field of jazzy soul and hip hop.” –DJ Mag
Two decades ago, Chicago-native Mark Farina began experimenting at his DJ gigs, dropping slower, deeper tracks along the lines of disco classics, acid-jazz, hip hop, and downtempo. In Chicago, which is primarily known as a house music town, his selections were deemed more appropriate for home listening than for the dance-floor. Despite this, Farina continued to develop his sound, which soon after became coined as Mushroom Jazz. Mark created a popular series of mixtapes that circulated in the Chicago area and beyond, the demand for which grew from 50 to 500 tapes per mix!
Soon after, Mark took his experiment-turned-endeavor to try it out in a new home. Farina began juggling two residencies in Chicago and San Francisco, and he began throwing his own Mushroom Jazz club night in the city by the bay.The Monday night party became an integral part of the SF scene, gathering an eager following for five years.
After years of dormancy, a Mushroom Jazz party has been revived! Farina is playing his most prime Mushroom Jazz sound selections quarterly at Monarch, in the SoMa neighborhood of San Francisco. The next Mushroom Jazz party is October 24th, 2012 and it is assured to get your booties boomin’ and your mushes roomin’

Lavish Habits is a new electronic-infused indie label out of San Francisco.
As contemporary music progresses, it’s clear that pop and rock artists are turning to the innovative capabilities of electronics to make unique and exciting music. Lavish Habits aims to highlight artists who have a tendency toward pop and rock with a firm foundation in dance-oriented rhythms. The result is a merging of scenes that bring together the hedonism of dance music and indie hipness.
The label so far has three signees, including two SF-based artists, Blackbird Blackbird and Maus Haus, as well as Brooklyn-based Body Language. Each has their own signature sound that showcase different flavors in indie dance, from Blackbird Blackbird’s dream-infused chillwave, to Maus Haus’s gritty, vintage synth-laden rock, to Body Language’s funky, R&B-flavored jams.
San Francisco’s Maus Haus has just been signed to Lavish Habits and are slated to release their upcoming seven-track Light Noise EP on October 2 (for digital), followed by the physical release on October 23.
“You wouldn’t be off base to consider San Francisco’s Maus Haus one of the brightest hopes in the city’s avant/indie realm. Picture Brian Wilson meeting Marcel Duchamp and departing together, arm in arm, to plan pocket symphonies…I’m betting these fellows won’t remain a mousy secret for long.” — Bay Area Guardian
Maus Haus is a concoction of Kraftwerk, the Beach Boys, and Sonic Youth steeped in a solution of glitchy noise, dirty drums, and buzzy synthesizers. Through this heady mix, the band is still eminently approachable, with catchy vocals, and moving rhythms. The resulting sound is patently unique, yet strangely familiar.
Since the release of 2009’s sprawling Lark Marvels, the band has progressed from a stage-filling 7-person ensemble to a powerful 4-piece with each member attending to multiple instruments, recalling the frenetic live performances of Battles. The upcoming seven-track Light Noise EP is slated for digital release October 2, and physical release October 23 by new imprint Lavish Habits.
Maus Haus has supported Crystal Castles, Dengue Fever, Autolux, Black Moth Super Rainbow, !!!, Javelin, School of Seven Bells, on both coasts and between. The band was awarded “Best New Synth Rockers” from SF Weekly, and “Band of the Year” from the Deli Magazine. In 2010, the band shared San Francisco’s Treasure Island Music Festival main stage with artists such as LCD Soundsystem, Die Antwoord, and Holy Fuck.
Lavish Habits is happy to announce the signing of artist Blackbird Blackbird and will be soon releasing his next EP, titled “Boracay Planet”. Blackbird Blackbird is the moniker of San Francisco based wünderkind Mikey Maramag. His unique style of dreamy folktronica recalls influences from all ends of the musical spectrum; deeply textured, hypnotic songs pay homage to psychedelic pop the likes of Caribou and Washed Out, while the warmth of analogue instrumentation spliced with digital artifacts hints at contemporaries James Blake, Four Tet and Mount Kimbie. Featuring remixes from bass music virtuoso Grenier (aka DJ G) and Atlanta’s foremost proprietor of rave music, Distal, Blackbird Blackbird’s EP, Boracay Planet, is sure to sate his dedicated followers while garnering new fans from all walks of life. The Distal remix of Keep It Up combines Blackbird Blackbird’s easy going indie sound with hard basslines allowing the track to take on a sound almost everyone can enjoy.
