It’s been a month full of surprises (Read “GA Join Om”)! Ready for another one? We have a new single from Radio Slave!!!!!
No matter what sounds you profess to be your dance music of choice, chances are that at some point over the last five years, you will have gotten your rocks off to Matt EdwardsAKARadio Slave. In that time Matt has remixed countless tunes for an incredibly-wide selection of notable labels. To boot, his touring schedule must be almost painful. So it was with great pleasure that Om was able to enlist his talents to compose a tune especially for our 15 Year Anniversary compilation.
To cut straight to the chase, “Orchestrating Maneuvers In The Dark” is a rhythmic deep tribal techno groove – obscure, dissident and crunchy – with a breakdown that dissolves into thin air – only to strangely and magnificently re-materialize into his funk-induced groove.
The single comes compete with an amazing reinterpretation from Mike Monday (Om, Great Stuff, Simple), a super-deep mix from Seth Troxler (Ghostly International) + Ryan Crosson (Wolf + Lamb, Spectral, Crosstown Rebels, Trapez) and a clubbed up version from Om’s own Al Velilla. The digital package includes a mix from Frankfurt up-and-comer M.in, who teamed up with the legendary Patrick Lindsey to create a bumpin funky tech rework.
“Sounds great def something I would play!” – Pete Tong
“Super” – Tiefschwarz
“Great track! would love to play this out!” – Laurent Garnier
“Great remix!” – Luke Solomon
“Wow! what a suprise from om records and it’s good too! will support.” – Stacey Pullen
“Right up my alley, obscure, dissident and crunchy..nice one!” – Osunlade
“Love It” – The Scrumfrog
Humanitarian organization NextAid presents its second annual World AIDS Day 2009 Events (WAD2009), a multi-date fundraising campaign in cities across the U.S. starting on November 25, 2009 in San Francisco and continuing throughout the entire month of December. Tied into World AIDS Day (WAD), a globally recognized day, which takes place every year on December 1st, NextAid activates the international dance music community to raise funds and awareness for AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children in Africa.

A portion of the proceeds from each of NextAid’s WAD2009 events will go towards two of its current projects on the ground: the Kawangware Street Children & Youth Project (KSCYP) in Nairobi, Kenya, and the loveLife GoGogetters program in South Africa. Bonobo’s “Days To Come” had to be one of the most played records ever. From hotel lobbies to my very own living room, there was no escaping that album. Not a bad thing!
After a string of sold out live shows and DJ gigs all around the world, Ninja Tune’s rising star is about to drop a new album in 2010. The first single is officially out now and features vocalist Andreya Triana. She’s worked with everyone from Mr. Scruff to Flying Lotus. Just like the fog to SF’s Sunset district, “The Keeper” is beautiful, haunting, and resonates. What else would you expect from Bonobo?
Alex McLeod’s digital, yes digital, works have been the talk of our digital community. You can find out about his images everywhere from juxtapoz to theriotclub to Kayne’s blog.
When I first looked at these images I thought they were photographs of actual installations, meticulously detailed installations at that. They are in fact 3D digital works crafted via several softwares, which makes it all the more unique and interesting.
Mcleod has achieved an imaginary realism that is very inviting. If I could only go home to that at the end of the day…
It’s finally almost here! For many many months, we’ve been behind the scenes working relentlessly to put together thisOm 15 line. Featuring artwork designed by everyone’s favorite street / urban artist, Sam Flores, the new line consist of pieces for both guys and gals.
We’ve taken the Sam Flores Om 15 art and applied it to merchandise like it has never been applied before. Light, breezy, form fitting, and intricately detailed, these pieces are uniquely urban but high end with a vintage feel all at the same time. Designed and printed in San Francisco by SF’s premiere and very exclusive printing house Supreme (just try and google their name). These guys bring with them years of experience printing for Bloomingdales, Addidas, and many more.
Want a unique holiday gift? These pieces are printed in extremely rare quantities. The line will be available at only a handful of select boutiques and online here at Om. Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we reveal more and more behind the scenes exclusives and let you know where you can get fitted with these Om x Sam Flores pieces.
The collectible art toy movement has been an increasingly growing market thanks to folks like Kid Robot, Giant Robot, and many other supporters of the movement. These cleverly crafted characters are the subjects of, California based artist, Brian McCarty’s photographs. What started as a examination of culture through it’s toys became a unique perspective in story telling using these mostly vinyl or plastic figures.
Brian McCarty’s unique ability to take one artist’s piece and create his own high impact story is why he’s attracted a huge international following. Recently featured in publications like Vogue, XLR8R, and High Fructose, it really is no surprise that McCarty is as respected as he is. He was also one of the select artist to participate in the Manifest Hope: DC Gallery. The gallery spotlighted artists who use their voices to amplify and motivate the grassroots movement that carried President-Elect Barack Obama to victory.
His upcoming book, which is a collection of his art-toy works, is being published by Baby Tattoo Books and is slated for an early 2010 release date. Brian will also have an accompanying exhibition at the LeBASSE Projects Gallery in Culver City.
2009 has been quite a year for Alice Russell. Local and fellow SF label, Six Degrees Records released “Pot of Gold” – produced by TM Juke now followed by this two volume album of 32 remixed tracks.
Like previous remix projects, Alice’s funky, soulful original album has been given the world class remix treatment from an all-star cast of producers including Mr. Scruff, DJ Vadim, Om’s very own J-Boogie, Shawn Lee, Ohmega Watts, DJ Day, and many more!
Alice has developed a burgeoning career as one of the hottest UK soul singers with growing audiences around the world. While comparisons have been made to other popular British vocalists like Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele, one listen and look at Alice and you can immediately tell she’s in a class all by herself. She has performed alongside well respected company that includes Roy Ayres, The Roots, Lonnie Liston Smith, De La Soul, Quantic, and The Quantic Soul Orchestra to name a few. In addition to this prolific musical output, Alice’s live performances continue to flourish with her ability to captivate an audience and to hold their attention throughout, expertly tugging at the heartstrings.
I’ve been following Alice Russell for years and fondly remember her first trip to the states as a Tru Thoughts artist playing at a tiny venue here in SF. She has since moved on to a new label and larger venues.
If you aren’t a fan already, get ready to purchase the entire Alice Russell catalog.

California-based artist, Nathan DeYoung has a great talent for exploring the human condition using explosions of shapes, colors, and subtle uncovered figures. His bio reads like this: Seeking to better understand those around him, Nathan DeYoung offers an inquisitive exploration into the human condition. Using the intimate observations of others as a muse, he creates characters that allow him to fully analyze and interpret those to whom he is closest. By revealing and destroying his characters in frenzies of shape and color, he ventures to grasp, uncover, and expose the often hidden, with the hope that insight into others and their actions will enable a deeper understanding of himself. Nathan DeYoung currently works and studies in San Diego, California.
“O’ Intimacy and the Aftermath”
Displayed here are pieces from Nathan’s series called “Windows & Mirrors”. Painted with acrylick paint on large wood canvas, these pieces are visual interpretations of Nathan’s journal entries with each piece in the series accompanied by a poem. The poems allow Nathan a voice to say everything the paintings couldn’t.
“Conversatwins With Mirrors”
Nathan DeYoung is definitely an artist to look out for. With recent galleries at LA’s Thinkspace, spotlight in Juxtapoz Magazine, and pieces featured in the upcoming Aqua Art Miami in December, DeYoung is continuing to build a name for himself.
