“DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes was born in West Philadelphia in a very musical household and developed a love of music at an early age. Jeff was just 10 years old when he started spinning records at parties using his family’s basement as a training ground for his expert mixing. Soon after, he began doing shows on the block party/ballroom circuit in West Philadelphia. It was through these shows that he quickly built a reputation, which had him spinning all over his hometown. Jeff rolled with many crews and emcees around Philly but it was 1985 when he met Will Smith on the house party circuit. Jeff’s regular MC was away so Will stepped to the mic and the chemistry was instant. DJ JAZZYJEFFANDTHEFRESHPRINCE were born and the rest is history. Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince released 5 albums in 7 years, sold 14 million records together, and won 2 Grammy and 3 American Music Awards.
Soon after, Jeff began pursuing solo projects and production work for superstar artists including Michael Jackson, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Dave Hollister, City High, Floetry, and Lil Kim. In 2004 Jazzy Jeff released his first official mix CD, “Hip Hop Forever II” for BBE. The album showcased Jeff’s trademark mixing skills and many underground and overlooked hip-hop classics. In 2005 Jeff continued his 20-year collaboration with Will Smith working on Will’s fourth solo release “Lost & Found.” The album features production and scratches from Jazzy Jeff. Jeff & Will have also been back performing together again at various shows and premieres. Jeff also began working on his second solo album, “The Return of the Magnificent” available now in stores and online, featuring collaborations with Method Man, Big Daddy Kane, De La Soul, and Rhymefest. In the last few years Jazzy Jeff has collaborated on with DJ AM on various occasions along with being one of the primary DJs for Activision’s new DJ Hero game. VTech, Stussy, and others are joining forces to present for the heads this Friday, December 17th at Mighty. On the musical bill is legendary hip hop / R&B artist Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Ali Shaheed is most well known for being 1/3 of legendary hip hop trio, A Tribe Called Quest and R&B supergroup, Lucy Pearl.
Along with bandmates, Q-Tip and Phife, Ali Shaheed Muhammad went on to recording five albums as A Tribe Called Quest, and establishing ATCQ as hip hop legends. Tribe exited the world via the same stage as The Beatles and The Police, but their influence still lives with artists like D’Angelo, Common, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, The Roots and Musiq. (see A Tribe Called Quest Movie coming in 2011. )
After Tribe, Ali co-founded a new super trio named Lucy Pearl. Here with band members Dawn Robinson and Raphael Saadiq, he was able to explore more of his music abilities. Lucy Pearl fused funk, rock, R & B and hip-hop bringing a new energy and sound which remains to be duplicated.
Famed director, Danny Boyle directs FRANKENSTEIN, a new play by Nick Dear, based on the novel by Mary Shelley, in the Olivier Theatre in London. Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller will alternate the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature; the cast also includes Mark Armstrong, Naomie Harris, Karl Johnson, Daniel Millar, Andreea Padurariu, John Stahl and Lizzie Winkler. The production will be designed by Mark Tildesley, with costumes by Suttirat Anne Larlarb, lighting by Bruno Poet, movement by Toby Sedgwick and sound by Mike Walker.
This is not the first time Danny and Underworld have worked together. Underworld, created the score for 2007’s Sunshine, and of course the cult hit, Trainspotting. We hear there is a Trainspotting remake in the works……
