The Trout's Top 10 Albums of 2008

1) Damon Aaron ‘Highlands’ (Ubiquity)
Horrible album artwork, but brilliant album. It reminds me of a really smooth Ben Harper mixed w/ Maxwell (in his prime).

iTunes Amazon

2) Beck ‘Modern Guilt’ (DGC)
Love what he did w/ the mellow vocals and the sporadic DM beats. Great pairing of like minds.

iTunes Amazon

3) Jazzanova ‘Of All the Things’ (Verve)
Sounds like straight up 70’s pimp soul. I really love the record, but wish they’d have left the rapping off of it.

iTunes Amazon

4) Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan ‘Sunday at Devil Dirt’ (Fontana)
Quite a dark album, but I love the dynamic of pairing Lanegan’s raw gravely groan with Isobel’s light and airy softness.

iTunes Amazon

5) King Kooba & The Trout ‘Slow-Gin Volume 6’ (O-W-E)
This mix sounds better to me with every listen.

6) Al Green ‘Lay it Down’ (Blue Note)
It’s great to hear Al Green sounding like Al Green again. Props to Questlove for helping put it together.

iTunes Amazon

7) TV on the Radio ‘Dear Science’ (DGC)
This album broadens the horizons for one of the most intriguing rock bands in the world.

iTunes Amazon

8) The Black Keys ‘Attack & Release’ (Nonesuch)
Another DM produced album in the top 10. Dude had a great year! These two white boys from Ohio rock like none other.

9) Clutchy Hopkins & Shawn Lee ‘The Clutch of the Tiger’ (Ubiquity)
Great jazz breaks and downtempo oddness. Love it.

iTunes Amazon

10) DJ Mark Farina ‘Mushroom Jazz 6’ (Om)
Props go out to my man Mark for keeping it fresh for over fifteen years!

Voices for NextAid

Sometimes voices just need to be heard. That’s what a few of your favorite DJ’s think. It’s time to spread the word. Think about it — I watched this video and posted it for all you lovely folks to take a look at. Then you turn around and show it to you favorite people, and then they show it to theirs…. you get where I am going with this. Its the small things we can do that bring light to some serious situations happening all around us. Watch as world renowned artists such as Louie Vega, Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, DJ Colette, DJ Dan and more speak about the AIDS crisis and give a voice to African children orphaned by AIDS.

A bit about NextAid — NextAid is a Los Angeles-based non-profit organization committed to developing and implementing innovative solutions to the challenges facing African children. Their mission is to promote community-driven, environmentally sustainable, economically and socially empowering responses to the AIDS orphan pandemic. NextAid collaborates with individuals, businesses and nonprofits to produce creative, culturally-rich, awareness-raising projects and music events involving technology, the arts, public education projects, and volunteer opportunities.

'Worthy' promo mix for your listening pleasure.

There’s nothing like a new mix to brighten your long workday. That’s why when this promo mix from San Francisco’s own — Worthy, came across my desk I had to post it for you all.
The mix, “Station Grape” skates the line between techno, tech-house, and minimal and features his upcoming new music on including his December Anabatic release Madcap.
Worthy is no stranger to the music game, after moving to San Francisco in 2001 he set up his studio and began producing and Djing around the city. Teaming up with Dirtybird, and eventually launching his own label Anabatic Records Worthy has taken his musical musings to whole new level. His remix work has shown up on Curfew, Utensil, and Tentigo Records, as well as DJ charts across the world.

Listen to the mix!

Check out his underground hit ‘Work the Walls’ on Anabatic Records, and view the accompanying video
here.

Now sit back, and enjoy the funk!

'Catnip' Polarizes America

It was a big week for Mike Monday’s ‘Catnip’ video. A couple weeks ago iTunes featured it as their video of the week. Some loved it, some hated it…. Mike had a few words to say about it himself, and I couldn’t agree more.

Take a read….

The hubris of my last post is worthy of a Greek tragedy. After reading the frankly hilarious Catnip video reviews on iTunes US, I have started to wonder whether I really meant what I said. How could anyone get so angry about something as harmless and fun as Catnip? I can’t help but think that the more vitriolic reviews say more about the reviewer than the video itself…….

There’s more – see the rest here.
