From their earliest moments as a band, Karl Hyde and Rick Smith of electronic act Underworld have been about more than just the music. Underworld has always been a multimedia experience, from the custom-made video projections to unique stage dressings to detailed album artwork — much of which are conceived by Tomato, the U.K.-based art collective in which the duo are partners.
Hyde also documents all of his travel experiences with photography and poetry — so we asked him to capture the group’s recent weekend trip to Italy for a performance at the Italia Wave Festival Livorno, exclusively for SPIN.com. What follows is a compendium of his images, verses, and quotes from a post-festival interview.
Jason Bentley premiered the new single from Underworld – “Always Loved a Film” – earlier this week on Morning Becomes Eclectic and now their blog has it for you as a stream! He describes the track as ‘joyful noise.’ We agree!!!
Here is round three of a photo shoot Samantha James did with 17 year old photographer, Jacqueline Rivera of She’s Jack. Check it out here.Samanatha James “Subconscisous” will be out soon featuring remixes from Eric Kupper, Marques Wyatt, Them Jeans, Nacho Marco, and more.
Distortions of pain drain away, leave a body fragile & experimental. Interviews by phone + illness a new experience – better than hang-overs, joy, joy. Listening to a CD we picked up in Tokyo: ’The First’ by Yoshio Kuge (Beauty out’ve Oil wrapped in Metal).

Is this a new track from Lauryn Hill? Chances are it’s not new, but a leaked unreleased track from the 1998 Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (hands down still one of the best records of all time!). She definitely is making a comeback according to the NPR interview and the buzz over her killer performance at the Harmony festival. New or not, it’s definitely welcomed! Download the tune, and be sure to catch her on the Rock The Bells Tour.
I know this isn’t exactly news to anyone, but Ilija Rudman is on fire!!! The Croatian producer has been on everyone’s hot list, and it’s really no wonder. The tracks he’s been putting out have been played from everyone from the underground to legends like Greg Wilson, Darshan of Metro Area, and Chaz Jankel.
For all you up and coming producers, take a listen to the 80’s disco house track, “Time and Time”, and hear how you create and instant classic!

Om alumni, Dave Pezzner, just dropped his debut solo album on Jimpster’s Freerange Records. Titled, “The Tracks Are Alive”, the album is a deep / dub house gem. Each track is memorable and DJ friendly, with deep build ups and breakdowns.
Although the sound is very much, Pezzner, you can hear elements of his funky house influence as well (many may not know that Dave was half of funky house artist, Jacob London). Listen to one of the standout tracks below featuring vocals from Larissa Kapp.
