2010 is off to a rough start and the world is calling for your help. The recent earthquake disaster in Haiti has left over 100,000 dead and even more injured, crippling what little infrastructure existed, devastating the capitol of Port-Au-Prince including hospitals and schools. Millions of people have been directly effected, left homeless, hungry and without clean water and even a means to live. They people of Haiti need your help and below are a couple organizations spearheading relief efforts.

People Under the Stairs joined a roster of artists that included “party till you puke on the piano” bad boy Andrew WK, ZZ Top, Sting, Fall Out Boy, Sonic Youth, Green Day, and Yo La Tengo, to re-record The Simpsons theme song for their 20 Year Anniversary episode.

Here’s more on how this whole crazy thing happened straight from Thes One:

As unbelievable as it is for me to type, Mike and myself will be on the Simpsons this Sunday on FOX. And not any Simpsons episode, but the 20 year 450th episode hour long special directed by acclaimed director Morgan Spurlock. A handful of musicians who the cast, crew and I’m sure the esteemed Mr. Groening respect were asked to reinterpret the classic Danny Elfman/Alf Clausen orchestra composition that has become as much apart of American culture as our national anthem. We flew to New York and recorded our portion with the amazing Andrew W.K. In Manhattan right before we left for our Africa Tour. From what I understand, portions of the song were also recorded by the Harlem Gospel Choir, Moby and Phish. We are in pretty high company. To what extent we will be featured on the show I am not sure, but we made the final edit and have signed our releases, so don’t blink or you might miss us (though I haven’t seen it yet). For our part, we cut the Simpsons theme on vinyl (with the help of Pete Lyman) and I made a custom Homer label for the two existing copies of the record, and then Double K cut it up on camera with myself on the drum machine, while Andrew W.K. Played the piano.

Hi Everyone,

Happy NEW beer! To celebrate, I am documenting my first beer brewing experience. In a little over a month’s time, the delicious GPA (Gunnther’s Pale Ale) will be ready to taste! Thought you’d enjoy a peek into the process below…

The glorious grain BAG! Full of delicious ground up barley (that smelled like grape nuts)

The 5 gallon pot, purchased on Clement Street for $40 (a startling value).

After bringing 3 gallons o’ SF tap water to almost boil, in goes the BAG, with a heavy towel to retain warmth.

Out comes the BAG after 45 minutes of steeping to make the “WORT” – AKA Beer before fermentation AKA grain tea.

Next, 6 lbs of sweet and sticky malt extract is added to the WORT and the heat is turned up to HIGH!

…also added at this time, the UK Challenger. This is essentially hops, picked fresh, mashed up and frozen w/ liquid nitrogen (to retain freshness) into pellets. They look like rabbit food.

After 30 minutes of a firm steady rolling boil, ½ oz of the 2nd hop pellets are added along w/ something I like to call an Aflac clarifying tablet and then after another 20 minutes, the rest o’ the hops are added.

Now, 60 minutes in, the WORT has bubbled into a very FUNKY smelling hoppy soup.

Time to cool the WORT down, dipped into a cool refreshing ice bath of U LINE gel packs in the sink for 45 minutes.

Ahhh…check out Billy Dee in the background. Behold the Deluxe Fermenter (sanitized and dry).

After filling the Deluxe Fermenter with 2 1/2 gallons of cool water, 1/3 of the WORT is added and then my lovely Brewing Assistant Riya ceremoniously PITCHES the yeast!

This is then followed by a vigorous pour of the remaining 2/3 of WORT to activate the yeast w/o stirring.

The lid of the Deluxe Fermenter is snapped on, and the Italian made air lock is inserted.

Ahhh…5-6 days of primary fermentation and then out of the Deluxe Fermenter and into the secondary fermenter AKA the glass CARBOY! To be continued….

Check out this added bonus video of the air lock doing its thing:

We have had ex-omies go on to work at iTunes, Triple 5 Soul, and some have even become huge DJ superstars (see Kaskade). Most recently, Om Hip Hop intern, Geoff was featured on a track on Mark Farina’s Mushroom Jazz Vol. 6 called “The What?” produced by Colossus. Already one album deep, G-OFF along with friends Haze, Mikos, and The Whooligan have a hip hop group by the name of 40Love and they just dropped this free download.

From 40Love
“Our album is near complete. Last night we realized we needed to share 40Love’s new sound and vision with our people. This song was written, produced, mixed and arranged within the last 24 hours. Our new project, “Dreams Don’t Sleep” will be releasing mid 2010. Peace, love and blessings to you and much success and happiness to everyone in the new year. -40Love"
