Eighty Mile Beach is a melding of Beth Custer's poetic lyricism, husky alto voice, and melodic clarinets with Christian Jones' guitar, bass, and layered, beat-driven grooves.
Eighty Mile Beach members Beth Custer and Christian Jones adopted the name for their group from a clandestine stretch of shore in western Australia, where the copper-sanded landmass of the continent meets the majestic, sky-blue expanse of the ocean. That space, where land intersects sea, where complementary opposites meet along one line, is a metaphor that aptly describes the duo, now based in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Eighty Mile Beach is a melding of Custer's poetic lyricism, husky alto voice, and melodic clarinets with Jones' guitar, bass, and layered, beat-driven grooves. Their first full-length release Inclement Weather (OM-008) garnered fabulous reviews the world over:
Eighty Mile Beach makes beat poetry - that is, the duo’s music is poetic and arty, driven by equally artful digital beats. (CMJ)
Eighty Mile Beach are a fascinating collaboration - a challenging blend of post-modern rhythms and retro-grooves that defy categorization. (URB)
The essence of Eighty Mile Beach is delicious sound. (SF Bay Guardian)
After a few years’ hiatus, Eighty Mile Beach returns to celebrate Om Records' 15th anniversary with a new single, Las Jacarandas. Upon release, Las Jacarandas went into regular rotation on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic with Jason Bentley.
