King Britt is known almost as much for his eclectic taste in music as he is for his numerous, multi–genre productions and remixes.
Known almost as much for his eclectic taste in music as he is for his numerous, multi–genre productions and remixes, Philadelphia producer and DJ King Britt credits the success of his own hip–hop, house, soul, acid jazz, and electric pop creations to his genuine love of all things musical. Producing and remixing since 1990 while attending Temple University, he met Ishmael Butler (aka Butterfly), who introduced Britt to his jazz–rap group Digable Planets. Acquiring the nickname Silkworm, Britt toured with the group as their DJ for more than two years. After rocking it with the DP´s Britt took a turn to pursue his visionary retro funk band Sylk 130. Releasing two albums as Sylk 130, and gaining an international hit with his remake of "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life", Britt firmly established himself as a leading player in the dance industry.
In 1995, King had an intense experience that led to the explosion of the Scuba concept. "Tripping on mushrooms, my mind was opened to a very new approach to music, one in tune to textures and spirituality" reflects Britt. "It was a great feeling, and has never worn off to this day." Scuba, Britt´s moniker for his house production was born. Scuba tracks are always dreamy and emotional, from remixes to production, there is always some sort of vocal mantra and very distinctive sounds from certain machines: the Scuba machines. Remixing and producing some of the world´s most sought after house music, Scuba´s distinctive style has since caught the acclaim of international tastemaker Gilles Peterson (both his "Incredible Sounds" and "Worldwide" compilations included Scuba tracks).
Om Records presents the first ever collection of Scuba remixes entitled "Hidden Treasures", hitting streets in July of 2002. "The Scuba collection is a continuous story in the search for the perfect sound of seduction. Each remix represents some feeling of pleasure seeking," explains Britt. Featuring hard to find classic remixes of such future music culture icons as 4 Hero, Vikter Duplaix, Ski, I:Cube and Fantastic Plastic Machine among others, this album is sure to appeal to the fans as well as the first time Scuba listener. Finally, all the great moments of Scuba can be had in one beautiful package!
A serious beat digger, Britt´s wide musical knowledge of funk, hip–hop, house and jazz has garnered him a reputation as a premiere global tastemaker. Buying records since age 7, Britt´s collection of vinyl now amasses well over 10,000!!! A hugely popular DJ in Japan, Europe and throughout the US, King Britt plays an estimated 150+ live shows a year to packed audiences worldwide and has a regular guest spot on Gilles Peterson´s "Worldwide Radio Show" on Radio One!
King Britt and Om Records presents the Scuba "Hidden Treasures" Tour. Performing a select group of dj sets worldwide, the sounds of Scuba will be seducing audiences on a global scale. Stay tuned!
